by NathanMan vs. MySQL, the Road to Victory!
Steps:
- Notice that site has become really slow the last few days.
- Stumble upon a fantastic resource by Ian Gilfillan for people with limited MySQL experience.
- Slap forehead and finally turn on slow query logging to find queries that take more than one second.
- Realize that, oh crap, we’re reading every row in the session id table constantly.
- Add an index to the session id table to fix that.
- Try to fix other expensive queries that use sorting.
- Fix those by upping the startup variables that effect sorting cache.
- Forgive self for rookie mistakes because I’m a CSS jockey not a DBA.

Seriously, All is forgiven! The speed is incredible, I didn’t think things could actually get faster!!!!!

Great service you ppl have here, a couple of my suggestions.
1) Give the user some font size control
2) Most ppl on the fly like to view all their feeds at one go… would be nice.

Yes, all is forgiven. Newshutch just rocks. The best newsreader I’ve ever seen. I was moving from G.Reader to Rojo back and forward and I was never happy. I think now I’ll settle here.

Great news!
Victory is near!

Chrono, with every browser in the universe (except IE natch) you can resize fonts. Newshutch’s design can usually tolerate 2 bumps up in font size without getting all wonky.
We’d like to do a river of news, but we have to implement some elegant solution for pagination first. We can’t just spit everything out at once or we’ll catch fire.

Keep up the great work guys. I remember back in the days when I was a MySQL rookie, so I know the pain you are enduring.
Even through all that, you guys are doing quite well. Just ensure you have built in scalability in to Newshutch so that when it does get more popular, you wont be killing the site.
Anyhow, thanks for a wonderful service!

I’ve found the site an awful lot faster in the last day or so, so many thanks for all the tweaks you’ve obviously been doing.
