We also looked at www.engineyard.com and the new www.mediatemple.net grid server offering. I'm excited about the prospect of grid server, but since it's new I didn't want to take a chance with their teething issues affecting my product launch. Perhaps you could use a few of their 1GB Rails "containers"?, that would be considerably below $400/month though. There is also EngineYard.com if you wanting superb scalability, redundancy etc, though the price point might be too much. I spoke with Bill Gorman, their chief sales guy - he was able to answer all questions clearly and immediately. I never had to wade through a phone support maze with this company. They're not cheap but are rock solid. If you're doing anything off the beaten path they will tend to make a point of saying it's not a "supported configuration", but have always been happy to help out with problems and queries anyway. My only complaint would be their over-enthusiastic support messages, which usually contain about 15 exclamation marks per paragraph ;) Where I work we use Rackspace.
