by NathanHow to make Newshutch the default feed reader in Firefox 2.0
Two helpful Newshutch users emailed about this today. The only bug I see is that it breaks the “Go back to the original page” link on the subscribe confirmation page.
Alex Muntean sent me JavaScript that will automatically set up Newshutch as the default Firefox reader, so that when you click on the RSS icon in the URL bar Firefox will submit a subscription request to Newshutch.
The script in action: Click to automatically set up Newshutch in Firefox 2.0.
User Nogg3r5 posted the way to do it by hand on his blog.
Thanks Alex and Nogg3r5!

Oh I have been looking for ways to do this since the first Firefox 2 release candidate came out!
But it does not work with the Firefox rl1 that comes bundled with Ubuntu 6.10 rl1.
Too bad… I am just unable to select the new feed source in the feed list in the preference window.

Wow, I just posted this to the forum in two places before reading the blog. I’m an idiot.
But it would still be helpful to provide this link on the front page along with the toolbar button, rather than buried here.

Zoom, it will be on the front page in the next release.

It works very well. Thanks all. It’s one bookmarklet less on my bookmarks bar

It does not work with either the Ubuntu Linux nor Mac OS X versions of Firefox 2. It worked just fine with the Windows XP version.
I should be able to select Newshutch from the preference’s list of available services after enabling it, right?

Hm it works well in Firefox 2.0 Macos X for me. For the records, I used Nogg3r5’s method. Yes once you’ve added the entries in the about:config you should be able to see Newshutch in the feeds preferences.

Aleks, it worked on Firefox 2 on Mac and PC for me. What happens for you?

I can confirm that it works in the Ubuntu. I am using the standard version, out of the Edgy repositories.
I also see no reason why it would work differently in any operating system. This is an internal Firefox setting, controlled by about:config.
