Downtime

We had more downtime than expected yesterday and today as we moved to a new host. But we’re up now. We’ll post more about the move to Joyent after a few days of experience with it.

It’s been quite a bumpy road so far, hasn’t it? ;-)

Service has been really bad over the last few days - unusable most of the time. It’s a shame, because Newshutch used to be really good.

Yeah - your new host sux. Hope they’re paying you for defectors. Thankfully I kept my Bloglines account up to date.

I’ve got a lifetime account with Textdrive/Joyent and would love you guys to hold their feet to the fire on this one. All their talk about easy scaling, Solaris, and Rails support means little if they can’t keep the server up.

Is this going to improve anytime soon? The downtime is really making your great application unusable.

What’s wrong with Newshutch? The last weeks were maddening. Every few days and hours downtimes - right now it’s the same (”Service Temporarily Unavailable”). And why nobody of the staff reacts? No new blog posting, no comments, there are also topics in the forums, but nobody says something about it?

So, uh, is newshutch ready for the “dead pool”? What’s going on? Just a tip: Silence is not the best policy.

So is this downtime going to be an on going thing? Because as great as Newshutch is there is only so much downtime I can put up with before I move on. And, as someone said before, it would be nice to be updated and not kept in the dark.

Just a faithful Newshutch fan here, with a word of encouragement and saying thanks for a great web app.

Hope the hosting challenges get worked out soon.

Another NewsHutch faithful here and I have to agree with everyone else unfortunately :-( Especially over the last few days/weeks it has been unusable most of the time. I hope this has been because of the move and not since you’ve been hosting with Joyent.

The Joyent guys are a smart bunch and I got a chance to speak with many of them at RailsConf Europe but as another commenter said all their talk about scaling doesn’t mean much if they can’t keep their servers up.

You might want to consider other excellent Rails hosting solutions such as http://www.EngineYard.com or http://www.Slicehost.com

I guess its Google Reader in the meantime though I hope to see you guys up soon! Good luck!

Thanks everyone, we’re working to resolve this. We’ll do a postmortem as soon as we figure it out.

Please please please respond with a blog post when your service is usable again. i LOVE newshutch and don’t want to use anything else, but the limited time i have to catch up on my feed reader is not enough to use newshutch. was seriously looking at joyent to for hosting…not so much now.

    Too little too late, unfortunately.

I have just downloaded a great desktop RSS reader for my Mac, and won’t be coming back. I cancelled my user account this afternoon.

Sorry Newshutch ? great application but lousy hosting and customer service. Good luck in the future.

Well, everything has been working properly for the last couple of days.
    Yay!

I’d like to add my vote for improved communication. I’ll stick with you through the rough periods if I know what’s going on, but without any communication, it’s pretty tempting to hop over to another feed reader.

During this downtime period there is only one thing I miss: The ability to download a OPML with all my feeds. Maybe you could cache everyone’s OPMLs the next time you schedule maintenance?

Then it would be easy to switch to another news provider temporarily.

Hope to see the service back online very soon!

Please don’t make me use Google Reader! I Love Newshutch!

    Well.

Nearly three weeks now, and we’re still in the cold. Sometimes it works, but most of the times, it didn’t. We don’t know if it’s evolving, if this will change one day. In fact, the team are pretty quiet, nearly hiding.

Yes I know, it’s free. But we’re still customers, a bit of communication would be nice!

It’s sad, Newshutch is great, and before that it was snappy. For now, I’ll be on google reader, with hope that this situation evolve.

Likewise, I hope that something happens soon or that there will at least be some communication about the current state of things. I don’t want to switch from Newshutch, because I really love it, but the last few weeks have just been painful.

My last few days with Google Reader have been awful…

    Things are still patchy.

For James and Marston: I just wanted to pop in here and note the servers ARE up. Our Accelerators are built to scale - and do. All the time.

I have reached out to Nathan to see if there is a hand we can lend here - but if it is outside the server, there is nothing we can do.
